NRI - Myths and Facts

I would like express my opinions and views here on a topic raised by my friend on facebook.

I would like to request the users to consider this as an honest opinion and I am not trying to be judgmental about any of the issues discussed here. When I don't agree with the views of some of the readers I hope we agree to disagree but do not develop any animosity towards the one we disagree with.

Before I go into the discussion I remember having a group discussion in my college regarding "Brain Drain" and I was the one who ferociously argued against "Brain Drain". Now I think I was wrong. By the way when we talk about Brain Drain we were not talking about people who migrate for working on the fields in Dubai or middle-east and other work or any work they could get their hands on. We are talking about the white collar job holders with at least a bachelors degree.

India brings back all it's citizens from foreign countries when they are in problem: people put it as "responsibility of a parent country" .......... once everything is fine people fly away from India saying that corruption is more in India, laws are not stringent, driving on Indian roads is like hell bla bla bla .... strange :) .......

I am thinking like this may be because I didnot get a chance to fly away ;) .....

I think it is the function of every Govt to safeguard the interests of its citizens. India or for that matter any country does not restrict its citizens from migrating to any other country either temporarily or permanently for the betterment of its own economy.
There may be people who try to justify the reason for their migration as Nageswar rao mentioned and I don't see anything wrong in that kind of justification. People migrate for a better living sometimes for themselves and sometimes for their families at the cost of their own lives.
Some questions in context which Chandu has already raised: Would you fault with the people migrating to cities from villages in India. Would you fault people migrating from one state to another. If Telangana Struggle creates so much unrest in Hyderabad and people start looking for safer cities to migrate would you fault with them?
I appreciate Nageswara rao's integrity when he gives the benefit of doubt to the human nature.

I think our discussion is not holisitc, since we are considering migration to countries where there is less corruption, better law and order, better driving habits and better roads though there is migration to countries like Libya, Egypt etc which are not as better as Sweden, US or UK or even India in some aspects.

  • Chandu Kota ‎1) People who fly away say that India is corrupt, raods are hell bla bla..But it doesnt work the other way. People dont fly away because of corruption and roads. Ask yourself, how many of the people you know flew for that reason?

  • Chandu Kota ‎2) 1/6th of the world population in 2.4% land(India). What do you expect? Thousands of people migrate from India every year.
    14 hours ago · · 3 peopleLoading...
  • Chandu Kota ‎3) Every rupee an NRI saves and sends to India, adds to the economy. The same thing cant be said of your income. Not that we or you do stuff intentionally, but thats how it works. Need to have better understanding of economics, to understand this part.
  • Chandu Kota ‎4) u say, people put it as "responsibility of a parent country", dont know what you are talking about. Last time I read about people stranded in Egypt, people had to pay twice the normal amount for Air India ticket, and rightly so coz Air India says, they have to fly empty one way

You might be surprised to know that migration happens from every country for that matter including US which is considered to be the No.1 destination for Indians. Its human nature to continuously strive for ones betterment and this is acceptable.

    Aroon Kumar
the basic thing what mr.nag is trying to tell is ....why people don't have gratitude towards something (be it nation or friend, in this case it is nation) that takes them into its warm and safe hands when everything is in trouble..and in co...unter we give it all the blame on its mistakes without remaining in the act of mending them....why do people have that kind of self centered attitude even in the case of motherland...? i guess mr chandu this wht mr nag is worried abt ...? it is not my question....so guys instead of liking the statement ..pls come forward to answer this? is that fair enough mr.nag ?

People who are migrating from their home country does not in anyway mean lack of gratitude. I know of an NRI orgainzation here called PFL (People For Loksatta) who are trying their best to change our country for the better.

Chandu Kota: So ppl in India dont call it corrupt? They do. It's just perception. When a person in India, says India is corrupt. It is opinion. When the same citizen livving outside, says the same thing, it is lack of gratitude.

Good question Chandu. I like your line of thinking.

Aroon Kumar mr chandu ..u missed the point again....see only u can say how good or bad your room is...it is your knowledge abt it ...and if any visitor says the same thing it is their opinion...the topic is not abt these differences...when u know ur room is filthy and unkept...mr nag is saying why do u just stay in it when u feel insecure outside and blame it when u find no use of its shelter...? repet the question...ur stats is of no use here...the google can tell us...its abt the answer wht machines cant tell... is tht fair clear ?

Aroon, your analogy is an oversimplification and misrepresentation of facts. Let me make it clear I don't doubt your good intentions though. You can't compare an NRI to a visitor, he was born and brought up in India, You can never take the India out of an Indian though you might take an Indian out of India. Though the visitor and owner of the room in your example say the same thing you seem to look at them differently which makes no sense.

Aroon Kumar i never asked to show facts ....i dont really need to back my argument ...because i am not arguing at all...and even there is not letter in my sentences saying to prove it or wrong...and ... i am not unifiying NRIs....even living in the same street in india.. we blame the way how it is ...

When someone says there is lot of corruption in India it does not mean they are blaming India. I cannot even find fault with people who say we can never change India though I do not agree with them.

You can't blame anyone without blaming yourself for what India is today since you are an Indian and you are responsible for what it is today.

Chandu Kota And for argument sake, lets assume watever nag initailly said is true. People take help from motherland and ditch it later. So are you saying humans in general are bad? or Indians are bad? or Indians who fly out to egypt, japan,uk and usa become bad? If you say its the last case, what is it impying? Lastly people hardly goto Japan to study or settle. Most of them are govt employess or contractors from Tcs,Wipro etc. So your point is that these people suddenly become bad?

I don't think ditching the motherland has anything to do with where you are living. We as Indians have to work for the betterment of the country, whether living in India or elsewhere.

    Aroon Kumar
so mr chandu ...u have arrived to the point where u can confidently say the statement is utterly false ..by unifying every NRI ...the thing ...i wanted u to tell this in ur first sentence itself...the concept of motherland is damn foolish t...hing here .lets not talk abt whether it is Indian or other..because it is not abt the country and its greatness.. its abt the human and his weakness...and wht mr .nag is telling is the same story how a boy feels abt liquor ...he or she would scold it untill they taste it ..and when they taste it ..they scold the water...and when they are thirsty they go for water ..and when they want to booz they go for a drink..u understood now ...no one can say it straight ...becoz it all lies in the attitude of an individual..because it is inside us...to blame others who are of no use to us for that moment...and we cant call them as a unit and tag them as bad NRIs..becoz not every man is a bad guy and the concept fails here...and mr nag is still way long to answer his inner fish...which is yet to drink the rum and feel low on water in that moment..mr chandu ...thank u for the time u have spent ..on commenting...

Excellent points Aroon but again oversimplified examples or may be I failed to relate your example to the case in point. Like you rightly said it is about human nature but I would not be judgmental in calling it a weakness.

    • Nageswararao Pedapati coming to the reasons given above .... consider a person settled in US 5 years back and visiting India once in a year .... his/her friends or parents surely asks (during each visit) him to come back to India and settle here .... how much pecentage of ppl are coming back ?? what are the reasons they are giving ?? my status message was intended in keeping ppl like that in mind ...

For the sake of discussion, can you tell me what is your agenda for them. How do you think they can change India into a better India which in your opinion can only be achieved by people living in India. Lets not talk for a moment on what reasons they give. Lets talk about why should they come back, what do we want them to do here in India.

Arise, Awake and Stop not till the goal is reached

Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?'
This is what most Indian middles class asks themselves when their heart calls for participation in politics, when their heart asks them to be brave and oppose the bad things happening around them, when their heart calls for standing up for good. Some succumb and play safe when they think it is not safe to stand up for the right.

Expediency(self interest) asks the question, 'Is it politic?'
This is what the people who find themeselves bound in the vicious cycle of politics, caste, communal and regional affiliations ask themselves when they are forced to take a stand on issues of social and personal importance.

Vanity asks the question, 'Is it popular?'
This what most of the Indian media, people in popular arts like cinema are asking themselves. Instead of creating awareness in the people they tend to just remain as mediums of entertainment rather than enlightenment.

But, conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?'
This is what people who listen to their conscience ask; people like JP, Anna Hazare, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and all those people who are striving hard in the background to make India a country of their dreams.

And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one's conscience tells ...one that it is right.
I would like to tell mey fellow Indians all over the world the time has come for us to ask what is right, ask how we can make things right, ask how we can act now to make things right.
I would like to urge you to participate in all the events extending support to people who are fighting against corruption. There is a march being orgainzed in the US, India and across the world. It is called Dandi March 2. Please participate in this march and make it a success and send a signal across to our representatives in the parliament and to the PM of India, Enough is enough, Now it is time to ACT.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI2Wf7E4WFg&feature=player_embedded

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

I disapprove the creation of the above video though I am amazed by your ability and creativity in creating it and appalled bye the way all this is being channelised. Use of abusive language in public space should not be encouraged. It would force us through a downward spiral in the process of maturing as a democracy. It would smudge the lines between the righteous and the unrighteous. It would bring shame to the cause you are fighting for.

I wish you could have created a video exposing his inconsistencies and how he might be masquerading as the champion of the Telangana Cause. Lets make people understand that Telangana is not a goal and its a means to development. Listen to what the pro-telangana people have to say. Lets have a rational debate. There is no need to run high on emotions.

Make an effort to understand their points and put your points through. If a leader has misled some people by stoking their primordial loyalties, lets expose that to the people in the creative ways you are good at.

Start with your street

I have come up with an idea for all those who are frustrated about what to do to change India into a better country.

Be the change you wish to see. - M.K Gandhi.

IDEA: Lets start with our streets. Find out what facilities in your street fall under which department's jurisdiction. Find out how much was spent on your street in the last five years. You might be surprised from the facts that would emerge. Find out who is accountable to the spending?

Get to know who is your ward councillor?
Get to know who is your MLA?
Get to know who is your MP?
Get to know what are the duties of these elected "peoples" representatives and also get to know what are the duties of the government "servants".

You know why I have put servants and peoples in quotes :-) Let us strive for a day when these quotes would be removed.

You need not be CM or PM or MLA or MP to change your country. Be a responsible citizen.

Dont ask me how? Ask Google God!!

Proportional Representation - Choice Voting

This system of full representation is also known by other names, including the single transferable vote, the Hare system, and the preference vote. It was the system of representation used by several cities in the United States during the first half of this century, where it was clearly shown to boost minority representation, for instance leading to the election of New York City council’s first African American member in 1937. Choice voting remains in use in Cambridge, Massachusetts today. This system can be used in nonpartisan elections, making it particularly good for electing leadership in private organizations and small localities.

For the voter, an election using choice voting is very easy. Candidate are simply ranked order of preference. So if you like Nash best, you put a “1” by her name. If you like Carston second best, you put a “2” by his name, and so on.
The vote count then proceeds in the following manner. First, the minimum number of votes necessary to be elected, or the ‘threshold’, is calculated. The threshold is usually calculated as the total number of voters divided by one plus the number of seats to be filled. So in a nine seat district, a candidate would need just over 1/(1+9),
or one-tenth of the vote, to be elected on the first count. Ballot papers are then sorted in accordance with voters’ first preferences.
Any candidates who gain more votes than the threshold are declared elected. Then the surplus votes (that is, the number of votes in excess of the threshold) of these candidates are transferred to the other candidates according to the voters’ second preferences. Any new surpluses created by this process are similarly transferred.
If all the seats are not filled through the reallocation of surplus votes, the last place candidate is eliminated and his or her ballots are transferred to the second choice candidates on those ballots. The ballots are then recounted to see if anyone has now reached the threshold.
This transfer process continues until the required number of candidates have been elected. The main purpose of the transfers is to ensure that your vote isn’t wasted if your favorite candidate doesn’t win. If your #1 choice is
eliminated, your vote is transferred to your #2 choice to help him or her win. This transfer process ensures that all voters have a good chance of electing one of their top-ranked candidates and that all political groups are represented in proportion to their strength in the electorate. Moreover, choice voting solves the problem of “spoiler” candidates and vote spliting, and also encourages a more inclusive brand of politics. Candidates will be more inclined to reach out to their opponents’ natural supporters if there is a chance that they could benefit from being ranked second or third on the ballot.

A new chapter in history: The Arabian Revolution

Arab youth seized their destiny from the dying old order and are demanding their piece of modernity

What would the Indian Youth do? Will we still be stuck in our old cliches
1) Politics is the bad man's game
2) Politicians are a band of dacoits, uneducated, ill-mannered
3) We need to educate the masses to bring about change
4) India can never get rid of corruption

Will we embark on building the nation of our dreams and realize?

I cannot fault the masses because they might be ignorant
I cannot fault the politicians because they are what they are meant to be
I do fault the bystanders, the ones watching politics as a spectacle, the ones who does not want to get involved in politics, the elite, the media, the middle class and the intelligent youth who cares a damn about politics.

Let your voice be heard. Encourage the good. Oppose bad.
